Andy Serkis Also Has Some Kind of Role in 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

Andy Serkis
Following yesterday's barrage of potential casting updates for Star Wars: Episode VII, one more tidbit has surfaced following a dinner that director J.J. Abrams had with some curious attendees before the table read for the sci-fi sequel happens today. The List (via Jedi News) reports Abrams had a dinner last night at a London restaurant called 34 where Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisherand Peter Mayhew were all in attendance, along with previously reported villain player Adam Driver. But one other surprising guest at the dinner was King Kong, Lord of the Rings and Rise of the Planet of the Apes mocap star Andy Serkis.
This is the first time Serkis has been linked to Star Wars in any capacity, but considering his incredible abilities in motion-capture performance, and the array of odd aliens that might be on display in the sequel, his involvement wouldn't exactly be surprising. It's just one more rumor to throw on the ever-growing pile as we wait for official news on Episode VII to surface. It seems like the big announcement will happen on Star Wars Day, May 4th, this coming weekend. We'll have official word on anything revealed about Star Wars: Episode VII as soon as the cat is out of the bag.Would you like Andy Serkis in Star Wars?

Will Ferrell is 'The Yank' in New Heist Comedy Picked Up by TriStar

Will Ferrell
Following news that Will Ferrell would reteam with John C. Reilly, along with their Step Brothersand Talladega Nights director Adam MckKay, in the comedy Border Guards, the funnyman has yet another new project for his future slate. Deadline reports Tom Rothman's revival of TriStar has just picked up The Yank, a comedy pitch meant to be crafted as a starring vehicle for Ferrell. Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink will script the film with his writing partner Jeff Morris and The Other Guys production company Mosaic is producing along with Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions banner. So what's the story?
The film would feature Ferrell as a mild mannered insurance courier who gets caught up in a conspiracy to steal the Crown Jewels in London. Seems like a bit of a weak storyline, especially afterMuppets Most Wanted just used the same heist objective, but maybe the pitch was just too funny to pass up. Ferrell can make nearly anything funny, so I have faith just based on just his interest in the project. Of course, we still have to see who will end up directing the comedy and just how soon it would get off the ground. This could always end up being one of those projects that Ferrell gets attached to but then falls away from.

Cary Fukunaga & John Legend Team Up to Tell 'The Black Count' Tale

The Black Count
Hot on the heels of the successful HBO limited series "True Detective," director Cary Fukunaga is readying his next big screen project now. After delivering a fie adaptation of Jane Eyre, Deadline has word that Fukunaga has another period drama in the works with The Black Count, an adaptation of Tom Reiss' Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name about French Revolution-era General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, the highest-ranking non-white man to ever serve in any European army and a favorite of Napoleon Bonaparte for some time. Fukuaga will adapt the book and also direct the film for a surprising producer.
Chart-topping singer John Legend will executive produce the film by way of his Get Lifted Film Co. banner, and they're the ones who optioned the book for Fukunaga to turn into a feature film. Sony Pictures is already behind the film with Michael De Luca saying, "Cary’s exceptional talent as a writer/director will bring to life all of the action and drama that have made The Black Count such a compelling read." The story is certainly a unique one as Dumas was the first non-white brigadier general in the French military, and his legacy inspired the novels of his son, the famous Alexandre Dumas, author of the classic books The Three Mustketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.
Fukunaga's next project is Beasts of No Nation and adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala’s bestselling novel of the same name with Idris Elba in the lead. This also seems like it would be the perfect role for Elba to take on, though he might be a tad too old. Perhaps Chiwetel Ejiofor could step up and more than likely land himself another Oscar nomination and hopefully win after losing to Matthew McConaughey at the most recent Oscars. Anyway, this project is still a little further over the horizon

'Star Wars: Episode VII' Casting: Oscar Isaac & More Pegged for Roles

Oscar Isaac
While we're waiting for Star Wars Day on May 4th to arrive with what presumably will be the big reveal for the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII, Deadline has more fuel for the fire with a table read for the sci-fi sequel looming tomorrow. The latest name to be pegged for a role is Inside Llewyn Davisstar Oscar Isaac, but it's unclear what role he would take. In addition, the two young leads might be locked down, and the return of our three main heroes from the original trilogy seems all but (unsurprisingly) confirmed, with one of them taking a very large role in the blockbuster that is slated to arrive in December of 2015. More below!
First, let's talk about our new heroes. It seems like Attack the Block star John Boyega and British stage actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers may end up with the two young hero roles. We don't know anything about Boyega's potential role, but Richardson-Sellers seems likely to be up for the female role rumored to be a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi. To give this latest update credence,Borys Kit of THR just reported that Boyega has dropped out of the Jesse Owens biopic Race. Combine that with the fact that he didn't take the role of Miles Dyson's son in Terminator: Genesis and it seems we have a solid case. As for Richardson-Sellers, she's surfaced more recently and also seems like a lock for the film. But we'll see.
As for the return of our old heroes Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, it just so happens that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill have all been spotted in London (via EW), which just so happens to be where Star Wars: Episode VII production will be taking place. Hamill popped up in a picture with Peter Serafinowicz (who is also the voice of Darth Maul) on Twitter, Ford was spotted at a restaurant and chilling with some helicopter pilots, and Fisher made a reference to her presence across the pond on her own Twitter feed. Sounds like the gang is back to me.
Even more interesting is that Deadline's report on Star Wars indicates that Ford's role in Episode VII isn't just a passing of the torch kind of appearance and that he actually has a huge part in the film. Does that mean we'll see Ford taking shots at whatever villain Adam Driver has been tapped to play in Episode VII? That remains to be seen, but with May 4th so close, rumors will be swirling non-stop until Disney and Lucasfilm make the official announcement. Stay tuned to see what turns out to be true.

Warner Bros. Already Developing Nine More DC Comics Feature Films

Warner Bros. / DC Comics
Briefly: Following last weekend's news that director Zack Snyder would be shooting the Man of Steelsequel, tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman, and a Justice League movie back-to-back, The Wall Street Journal reports on Warner Bros. ambitious plans to bring much more of the DC Comicsuniverse to the big screen. Apparently the studio has nine more films in development based on various DC Comics properties. At this time, the only other titles known are Sandman with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Fables from A Royal Affair director Nikolaj Arcel. Considering the number of heroes appearing in Justice League, it's not hard to guess some of the other films will be Wonder Woman, The Flash, and more.

Maya Rudolph Also Lending a Voice to Marvel & Disney's 'Big Hero 6'

Maya Rudolph
Slowly but surely, the seemingly secret voice cast of Big Hero 6, Marvel & Disney's first animated collaboration, is being revealed. So far T.J. Miller and Jamie Chung have surfaced with voice roles, and now The Wrap has word that "Saturday Night Live" veteran and Bridesmaids star Maya Rudolph will voice one of the lead roles. In addition, they've learned that Chung will voice a character named Go Go Tomago. However, Disney has yet to confirm any of these talents for roles in the film. Is there a chance the animated comic book adaptation is in trouble and may be delayed from the November 7th release date this year?
Don Hall and Chris Williams are co-directing the film, and all we've seen so far is a tease of the fictional setting San Fransokyo with no character designs or anything like that surfacing. Maybe Disney is holding off on a big reveal until Comic-Con this summer. Anyway, the film follows brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city.

Johnny Knoxville Goes Ferris Bueller for Universal Comedy 'Sick Day'

Johnny Knoxville
Following surprise casting as the voice of Leonardo in the reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesfrom producer Michael Bay  Johnny Knoxville is ready to get back into the comedy game again. Deadline reports the Jackass star is attached to lead Sick Day, a new comedy at Universal Pictures with The Break-Up writer Jeremy Garelick set to direct, following his latest comedy The Wedding Ringer with Kevin Hart and Josh Gad. Similar to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the film follows three friends who uphold a tradition of calling in sick one day a year to fulfill fantasies while not getting caught.
Knoxville's attempts at narrative comedy haven't fared very well with films like The Ringer, The Dukes of Hazzard, Daltry Calhoun and Life Without Dick in his past. Walking Tall has probably been his best big screen work outside of the Jackass franchise and the recent spin-off Bad Granpda, but that's about it. The original script comes from Garelick, so let's hope he's coming up with something that Knoxville can shine in. The other two roles still need to be filled anyway, so maybe they'll keep Knoxville on his toes. At the very least, we're just glad this isn't a straight-up remake of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Thoughts?

'Macbeth' Helmer & Michael Fassbender Reunite on 'Assassin's Creed'

Michael Fassbender / Assassin's Creed
Not too long ago, the first images from Justin Kurzel's adaptation of the classic Shakespeare playMacbeth surfaced with a glimpse at Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the film. Now a bit of a reunion from the lower profile drama is in the works, and on a much bigger project.Deadline has word that Kurzel is now in talks with New Regency and Ubisoft to direct their adaptation of the popular video game Assassin's Creed, which already has Fassbender attached to lead the film. The companies must like what Kurzel and Fassbender (who is also producing the video game flick) are churning out for The Weinstein Company film.
It's not a done deal yet, but Fassbender and Kurzel are eager to get started on the film, which is already slated for release on August 7th, 2015. There's plenty of time for the project to get started, and while video game movies always force us to be cautiously optimistic, this pairing seems extremely promising. For those who haven't played the game, the first installment was set in 1191 AD during The Third Crusade and followed an assassin named Altair, a hooded killer tasked with stopping the conflict and shaping future history. Other installments take place in various historical times, so it's not clear where the film will be set. We hope Fassbender and Kurzel can break the video game movie curse that plagues Hollywood.

Returning Heroes & New 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Cast Now Revealed

Star Wars / Disney
Literally one second after that rumor of Andy Serkis joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII, the entire cast of the sci-fi sequel was revealed. The announcement was made by Disney and Lucasfilm today, likely wanting to beat any leaks that would happen after the table read happened today in London. Returning heroes from the original trilogy include Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker. Meanwhile, confirmed new cast members include John Boyega and Daisy Ridley in the two lead roles, withOscar Isaac and Adam Driver both also on board.
Here's the first official photo of the cast during the table read with director J.J. Abrams viaStarWars.com:
Star Wars: Episode VII
In addition, the three brand new cast members that were not previously linked to the project areAndy Serkis (as we reported just moments ago) along with Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) andMax von Sydow (The Seventh Seal, Minority Report). If we had to bet, we're pretty sure von Sydow will be playing another villain along with Driver, but we wouldn't count on them playing Sith Master and Apprentice this time. Abrams added some publicity fluff with the reveal saying:
"We are so excited to finally share the cast of 'Star Wars: Episode VII.' It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."
The only cast member that we haven't really seen anything from is actress Daisy Ridley, but if you want to see more of her talent, check out her acting reel right here. Otherwise, having this full cast announced is just awesome, and I can't even imagine how incredible it must be to sit in that room for a table read for an all-new Star Wars movie with Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2. There might be more cast to be added, but clearly these are the most important and primary lead and supporting roles. But when will we get a title? Stay tuned for many more updates.

Tom Hooper & Eddie Redmayne Set to Reunite for 'The Danish Girl'

Tom Hooper & Eddie Redmayne
Way back in September of 2009, Nicole Kidman was slated to star in an adaptation of The Danish Girl with Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson at the helm. But five years later, the talent has switched out both in front of and behind the camera. Deadline has word that Les Miserablesdirector Tom Hooper will now be at the helm of the story about Danish painter Einar Wegener, who would become the first person to receive a sex change operation from a man to woman in 1931, becoming Lili Elbe. And it will be Hooper's previous musical ensemble star Eddie Redmaynetaking the challenging period drama lead role.
As for the role of Wegener's wife Gerda, that still seems to be open with Kidman no longer involved (Charlize Theron was in the mix for the role before that). The film is based on David Ebershoff's book of the same name, and has been adapted by Lucinda Coxon (Wild Target, Crimson Peak). This sounds like it could be another Oscar contender for Hooper, who also previously directed the Best Picture winner The King's Speech. It definitely sounds like a role that could earn Redmayne an Oscar nomination if the project stays on track, so we'll keep our ears to the ground for more updates.

Mondo Putting 'Jurassic Park' Soundtrack on Vinyl & It Looks Amazing

Jurassic Park Soundtrack Vinyl
Hold onto your butts! This looks amazing and I'm sure it sounds even better. Mondo has announced and revealed photos of their upcoming Jurassic Park soundtrack vinyl release. Yes, the iconic John Williams score to the seminal sci-fi classic Jurassic Park is getting the vinyl treatment, pressed on 180 gram vinyl as 2x LPs. The soundtrack has been remastered for vinyl and will be printed with gorgeous artwork on two packaging variations, one from artist JC Richard and a limited edition vinyl from artist Dan McCarthy. Both are, my opinion, must haves. Especially because this happens to be one of my all-time favorite scores.
Here's a look at the packaging and vinyl art for Mondo's remastered JP soundtrack, which will be sold at MondoTees.com starting June 11th. Up first, it's "Version A" with art by JC Richard and 2XLP 180 gram black vinyl "with randomly inserted Dilophosaurus variant" for a cost of only $35. Take a closer look below:Jurassic Park Mondo Vinyl - JC RichardJurassic Park Mondo Vinyl - JC RichardJurassic Park Mondo Vinyl - JC RichardJurassic Park Mondo Vinyl - JC RichardHere's the "Version B" vinyl with art by Dan McCarthy, featuring 2XLP pressed on 180 gram amber vinyl.Jurassic Park Mondo Vinyl - Dan McCarthyJurassic Park Mondo Vinyl - Dan McCarthyJurassic Park Mondo Vinyl - Dan McCarthyJurassic Park Mondo Vinyl - Dan McCarthy

There's nothing more for me to say except - I cannot wait to own this. John Williams' Jurassic Park score is, truly, one of my all-time favorites. It was one of the first soundtracks I ever bought and one that I've listened to consistently for years. Mondo has been selling movie nerds very hard on these vinyl releases, and I think I'm finally going to cave. "There are few films where the experience of watching the film is matched only by experience of listening to it, and Jurassic Park is one of those rare films," said Mondo Creative Director Justin Ishmael. Agreed. The Jurassic Park vinyl soundtrack continues Mondo's commitment to "crafting beautiful packaging for scores they love and adds to an impressive collection that now includes" Poltergeist, Oblivion, Halloween, Drive, The Omen, Coraline, Paranorman and more on the way for 2014. Yes, please.

Sandra Bullock May Throw Tupperware Party for 'The Help' Director

Sandra Bullock / Brownie Wise
After nearly getting lost in space in last year's Best Picture nominee Gravity, it sounds like Sandra Bullock is getting a little more down to Earth for her next role. THR reports the Oscar winner is currently circling an untitled adaptation of Tupperware Unsealed, a book by Bob Kealing based on the true story of of Earl Silas Tupper's trademarked housewares skyrocketed into fame in the 1950s when sales executive Brownie Wise came up with Tupperware parties. Wise's exploits turned her into a popular figure, with parties sweeping the nation, and landed on the front of Business Week, the first woman to grace the cover.
The Help director Tate Taylor is currently attached to direct, and he also wrote the script. However, producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films/TV are currently shopping around the project to studios, so it doesn't yet have distribution. The company has a deal at Disney, so that's likely the first place the pitch will go off, but we'll see where the project ends up. Bullock isn't formally attached, though she's certainly interested in the role, so someone else could just as easily take the part. Sounds like it could be a fun film akin to Flash of Genius with Greg Kinnear.

'Let the Right One In' Director Building Jo Nesbo's 'Snowman' Thriller

The Snowman / Tomas Alfredson
After taking on an adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, director Tomas Alfredson has found his next thriller, and it's a project left behind by Martin Scorsese. Now Variety has word that Alfredson, who also directed the adaptation of Let the Right One In, will be in the director's chair forThe Snowman, based on Jo Nesbo's crime novel of the same name. Alfredson will also be working on the script with Soren Sveistrup and will produce the film by way of his Another Park Film banner along with Working Title Films. Scorsese toyed with the project for a few years, but now that he's taken on Silence instead, a new director was needed.
For those who aren't familiar with the Swedish crime novel, it's actually the seventh in a series following recurring detective Harry Hole as he looks into gruesome killings in Oslo, Norway. The case in question concerns a missing woman whose pink scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman, and just might be the work of a serial killer. Though Alfredson inherited the directing gig from Scorsese, the Hugo and Wolf of Wall Street director is still executive producing alongside Nesbo. Working Title was hoping to kickstart a franchise following Harry Hole, much likeAlex Cross, but there's no guarantee.

Jamie Chung Joining the Voice Cast of Marvel & Disney's 'Big Hero 6'

Jamie Chung
Despite a release date of November 7th 2014, we still haven't seen or heard much from Disney and Marvel's first animated collaboration, the adaptation of the lesser known superhero team Big Hero 6. We've only gotten some teases of concept art and settings, but we don't know what any of the characters look like, and so far only comedian T.J. Miller has been tipped to lend his voice to the project. But now one more voice has been revealed by way of NBC (via ComingSoon) as they list the animated flick in the screen credits for Jamie Chung, who has been in the network's show "Believe." But we don't know her role yet.
Chung has been seen in plenty of less family friendly fare like Sucker Punch, The Hangover Part II, The Man with the Iron Fists and has a role in this summer's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. However, she also has a little bit of Disney experience since she played a live-action version of Mulan in the ABC series "Once Upon a Time." For those just joining us, Big Hero 6 features brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city.

Kevin Smith's 'Krampus' Horror Gets Cast, Concept Art & New Title

Anti-Claus / Kevin Smith
Earlier this year, director Kevin Smith revealed that another feature film project had surfaced following an idea that came about during an episode of Smodcast's EDUMACATION podcast with Andy McElfresh. The Clerks and Dogma director intended to co-write the script for a film calledComes the Krampus, which was proposed as a holiday horror anthology that would have Smith directing a segment. Now the film is making moves towards a reality as THR reports XYZ Films will be selling the project to foreign buyers at Cannes, and Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez and Michael Parks are on board.
For those who don't know, the film will tell the tale of the centuries-old, devil-like creature known the world-over as the Krampus – the “Anti-Claus” of Alpine country folklore, infamous for eating naughty children during the season of giving. And that's why the film has been given the new title of Anti-Claus. Here's a first look at the terrifying old holiday creature by way of some pretty creepy, gothic concept art:Anti-Claus
Smith says, "When I was a kid, if they wanted to make a Christmas horror movie, they’d stick an axe in Santa’s hands. In Anti-Claus, we leave Santa alone and creep with the Krampus through twisted tales of holly-jolly murder, desire, desperation and despair. Just in time for the holiday season.” The filmmaker mentions several tales, and while first word of the project had Smith listing his wife Jennifer Schwalbach, Jason Mewes and Carol Banker as directors for segments, this latest report doesn't mention their involvement in that capacity. However, Mews is listed as executive producer and Schwalbach as producer.
However, it's still believed that Smith will shoot this first before proceeding with his plans for Clerks III, just as we heard in February. And for those keeping score, all of the aforementioned cast members appear in Smith's latest film Tusk, which is slated for release later this year by A24. In addition, Smith is also bringing Tusk's make-up artist, the legendary sound effects man Robert Kurtzman, to help bring the Krampus to life.
As Smith says, "In America, we’re taught that nice kids gets presents from Santa and naughty kids get coal. But in countries like Germany, Austria, Bavaria, Romania and Hungary, Christmas is more metal than merry: Saint Nicholas brings a sack full of toys for good kids and the Krampus carries an empty bag for taking away the bad kids. I wanna see that Christmas movie. So rather than wait for it, we’ll make it instead.” We're definitely interested, but we want to see Tusk first before getting too excited. Sound good?

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels Get Cleaned Up for 'Dumb & Dumber To'

Dumb & Dumber To
The comedy sequel Dumb & Dumber To doesn't arrive until this fall, but with the teaser posters and a first look photo already out there, we're hoping for some sort of teaser trailer to arrive sometime soon. Since it's a Universal film, it would be smart to throw a teaser trailer in front of their summer comedy Neighbors when it hits theaters on May 9th. Until then, another photo from the film has arrived featuring Lloyd (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) taking some time to get cleaned up, presumable while on their journey to find the latter's illegitimate daughter for a kidney transplant. Their facial expressions are perfect. Look!
Here's the new photo from Peter & Bobby Farrelly's Dumb & Dumber ToDumb & Dumber ToDumb & Dumber To is directed by Peter & Bobby Farrelly (Dumb & Dumber, There's Something About Mary) and written by Sean Anders & John Morris (Sex Drive, She's Out of My League), Mike Cerrone (Me, Myself & Irene) and Bennett Yellin (Dumb & Dumber). Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, 20 years after their last road trip, and this time they have to hit the road again to find Harry's illegitimate daughter for a kidney transplant. Laurie Holden and Kathleen Turner also star in the film which Universal Pictures will send to theaters everywhere November 14th, 2014. Well?

Zack Snyder Now Set to Direct 'Justice League' After 'Man of Steel 2'

Justice League
For anyone holding out for Warner Bros. to get Ben Affleck to direct Justice League now that he's all set to play the studio's new Batman in the gestating sequel to last summer's Man of Steel, we have some potentially disappointing news. The Wall Street Journal officially revealed that Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman director Zack Snyder will be behind the camera, confirming the rumor that first surfaced just over a year ago, and sticking with the DC Comics universe building that we've been hearing about endlessly. President of production at Warner Bros. Pictures, Greg Silverman, announced the news today saying, "It will be a further expansion of this universe.Superman vs Batman will lead into Justice League.”
The studio isn't setting a release date yet, but the paper notes that the movie isn't likely to hit theaters until 2018 at the earliest. After all, Batman vs. Superman isn't slated to arrive until May of 2016 now (against Marvel's Captain America 3 if the calendar remains unchanged), so that makes perfect sense. However, there are rumblings that the sequels will be shot back-to-back, andJustice League could arrive as early as 2017 with an announcement at Comic-Con this summer. Maybe that's the real reason Warner Bros. decided to push back the Man of Steel 2 release date to 2016.
Either way, we've all assumed that the next DC Entertainment sequel would be leading to a Justice League movie, it was just a matter of when. After all, Gal Gadot is already slated to appear as Wonder Woman with Batman and Superman in the gestating Man of Steel sequel, and the character Cyborg just entered the mix last week too. Does this mean we'll get cameos from The Flash, Green Lantern or Aquaman as well? That remains to be seen since the announcement is just now official, so we've got plenty of time to figure that out down the road. Happy to have Zack Snyder directing Justice League?

Jude Law Replaces Michael Fassbender in 'Genius' with Colin Firth

Jude Law
Not too long ago, we learned that Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman would reunite yet again for the period drama Genius. The film focuses on literary editor Max Perkins, who worked with the likes of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, with our story focusing on his relationship with author Thomas Wolfe. Originally, the latter author was meant to be played by Michael Fassbender, but Screen Daily reports Jude Law will be replacing the actor in the film that is said to depict Perkins as a man who "served these authors not only as editor extraordinaire but also as critic, psychoanalyst, father-confessor, and devoted friend."
Michael Grandage, a theater director, is making his feature film debut with the film that has a script from Hugo writer John Logan, adapted from Perkins' biography. Switching out Fassbender for Law isn't a downgrade at all, and while we're not sure why the switch was necessary Fassbender was first linked to the project back in 2012, and schedules get jockeyed around a lot in Hollywood, so it's not all that surprising of a move. With a cast like this, there's a good chance this could become an Oscar contender, but with a theater director behind the camera, that's not necessarily a guarantee. Production begins in October. Interested?

Spielberg to Direct 'The BFG' But After Tom Hanks' Cold War Drama

It's been a busy week for news regarding the next directorial effort of iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg. The return of Robopocalypse, an adaptation of The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, thehistorical epic Montezuma and a Cold War drama with Tom Hanks have all been mentioned as potential new projects. Now Variety adds one more to the mix as Spielberg has now attached himself to DreamWorks' adaptation of Roald Dahl's book The BFG, a family friendly story about a little girl who leads a big, friendly giant and the Queen of England on a journey to stop the fiercer man-eating giants from gobbling children. More below!
Looks like Spielberg wants to venture into children's stories, just like Martin Scorsese did withHugo. The project has been sitting dormant at DreamWorks since the studio picked up the property in 2010 and now it will come to life with a script from Spielberg E.T. The Extra Terrestrial writerMelissa Mathison. Considering the storyline, this seems like a wholly appropriate project for the two to reunite on. The plan is for production to begin early in 2015 for a release sometime in 2016.
Along with that news is more indication that Spielberg will likely reteam with Tom Hanks for the aforementioned untitled Cold War drama as his next project. For those just hearing about that project, the script tells the true story of James Donovan, an attorney who negotiated the release of downed U-2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers, who was held and interrogated by the KGB and imprisoned for espionage. Production on that project would begin in September, and DreamWorks would likely release during awards season late in 2015. If anything else comes up for Spielberg, I'll be sure to let you know.

'Batman vs. Superman' Adds Yet Another Hero: Ray Fisher as Cyborg

Cyborg / Ray Fisher
If having Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in the same Man of Steel sequel just wasn't enough, the film that has been frequently referred to as Batman vs. Superman has just gotten another staple superhero added into the mix. Variety has word that after testing actors over the past two weeks, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have cast stage actor Ray Fisher in the role of Victor Stone, aka Cyborg, a robotic member of Justice League in the comic books. However, it doesn't sound like the role will be all that significant in the sequel, and will lead into a bigger part as the studio builds their own comic book universe.
This is one of those roles and character appearances that we wish would have stayed secret until the film hit theaters, because keen comic book fans would have clearly known who Victor Stone is, even if he's not actually Cyborg in the film at this point. In fact, David S. Goyer pointed out, shortly after Man of Steel hit theaters, that S.T.A.R. Labs was mentioned in the film, and a special feature has Henry Cavill talking about the potential for that to be integral to the future of the franchise.
For those who don't know, Cyborg a cybernetically enhanced human who was a member of the Teen Titans for a long time, but in more recent comic book series he has become a founding member of the Justice League. We're not familiar with Fisher's work (though he also tested for Star Wars: Episode VII), so we don't know what to expect, but it's just one more interesting detail in this developing comic book sequel. Maybe Martian Manhunter will be hinted as well? The Flash has already been tipped to make an appearance in some form too. We just hope this is all done carefully and with some respect for the source material without sacrificing substance for a gimmick. Stay tuned for any more updates. Thoughts on Cyborg?
