One week after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters, audiences will get to see the spectacular comedy Neighbors starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. This writer has already seen the film, but our review won't be coming until closer to the release. But having already seen the film has me excited to hear news from SlashFilm that the comedy's director Nicholas Stoller (who also was at the helm of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the spin-off Get Him to the Greek) has another promising project lined up with Rogen and comedian Kevin Hart in the lead. The inclusion of Hart might have otherwise sullied our excitement, but the premise for this particular buddy cop comedy sounds far too fantastic to even worry about at this point.
Stoller was asked about what his next project might be as a director, and he revealed, "The next thing I want to direct is this thing for Seth and Kevin Hart. It’s basically about the first white cop, black cop pairing in history. That takes place in the late ’40s and they have to bust jazz musicians for weed. It’s kind of a Baz Luhrman world mixed with Tarantino shit. It’s a lot of things." Yeah, that sounds incredible. However, Hart already has a buddy cop comedy with Ride Along and the developing sequel, and we'd much rather see Donald Glover or Jay Pharoah take the role instead. Of course, Hart is a much more bankable name, so we understand the appeal from that perspective.
The script comes form "The Late Show" head writer Rodney Rothman, coming off Grudge Match last year. That last bit of his filmography doesn't inspired much confidence, but Rothman also produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and The Five-Year Engagement for Stoller, so he's got the potential to deliver great comedy. Rogen and Hart both appeared in The 40-Year Old Virginnine years ago, but didn't have any screentime together (the same thing happened in last summer's This is The End). Now each of them have become big box office draws in the comedy world, and while this writer undoubtedly prefers Rogen over Hart, I'm hoping their pairing makes for an incredible buddy cop comedy with a unique twist.
