Following news last week that a clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past would be teased after the credits of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, despite both films being situated at 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures respectively, there were rumblings and hopes that this might eventually lead to some cross-studio collaboration to combine all Marvel characters into a shared universe, regardless of which studio owns them. Now we have some comments from Sony's The Amazing Spider-Manfranchise producer Avi Arad and Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past and Fantastic Four reboot writer and producer Simon Kinberg, and they both seem to have opposing views on the possibility of a multiple studio, comic book crossover.
First of all, producer Avi Arad doesn't sound all that interested in Marvel Studios, Fox and/or Sony Pictures teaming up to allow their characters to crossover into each other's movies. Arad told IGN:
"I think I'm probably a little bit of the militant here. I think it will take a moment in which we've run out of ideas. There's so much to tell about Spider-Man. There's so much to tell about the Sinister Six. The relationship between Spider-Man and Venom will bring a whole other world in."
That's not surprising since the plans for The Sinister Six and Venom spin-offs aim to expand the universe of The Amazing Spider-Man, and that expansion begins with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in just under a couple weeks. Fox seems to have similar plans for their Marvel franchises, X-Menand the new take on Fantastic Four, with writer and producer Simon Kinberg hired to shepherd those comic book properties, likely into another separate shared universe. Thankfully, Kinberg doesn't seem as adverse to the idea of the studios crossing over as he told ComingSoon:
"Listen, I would love it. The dream to me - I almost feel like Martin Luther King or somebody. I see a world where everyone is joined together. The dream is, obviously, one day to do a Marvel movie that is with all the Marvel characters or at least a universe where they can dive in and out of one another's films. Because that's the way the comics were created, I think that's the way the movies should actually be. The dream is that we could cross-pollenate and everyone would be building off the momentum of each other, which is what actually happens. For a series of business reasons, they aren't."
So it sounds like Kinberg is at least hoping and wiling to make a multiple studio Marvel crossover work in the future, but there's an entire studio of people who would have to figure out the bureaucratic bullshit that goes into making a business deal like that happen. At the end of the day, it comes out to money, and how to split what would become some huge box office gross. One would think that splitting the profits evenly would be smart, but surely each studio thinks their respective properties are more valuable or more of a draw and would want their equivalent worth as opposed to an even split. Anyway, we'll keep dreaming of an even more massive Marvel universe, but we won't hold our breath. Thoughts?
