After finding success at Disney with The National Treasure franchise, even though development on a third film in the franchise has been stagnant, director Jon Turteltaub is staying comfortable at the House of Mouse with a new project. Deadline has word that the man who was also at the helm of Disney's Cool Runnings, The Kid and The Sorcerer's Apprentice will now direct It's a Small World, an adaptation of the staple theme park attraction with an infectious song that is celebrating it's 50th anniversary. Again, this sounds silly, but if Pirates of the Caribbean can turn into a billion dollar franchise, anything can happen.
In what seems like an effort to capitalize on the success of The LEGO Movie, Disney has landed that film's producer Dan Lin to produce this project, but we hope this won't try to lazily replicate that film. Between this news and last night's revelation that the marshmallow candy Peeps is getting the feature film treatment, it goes without saying that Hollywood is just desperate for existing intellectual property, no matter where they can get it. There's always a chance this could turn out to be something great, but we're immediately skeptical. Anyway, Turteltaub recently directed the geriatric comedy Last Vegas, again showing that he's a director prime for making movies for the most general of audiences, so we'll see what happens.
