With the 2014 Cannes Film Festival coming up, it's been nearly a year since The Immigrantdebuted at last year's French film festival, and now the film is poised for release in limited theaters next month. The film follows two sisters (Marion Cotillard and Angela Sarafyan) in 1921 who head to America in search of a new life, but their immigration turns into a nightmare when one is quarantined for a lung disease, and the other is forced into prostitution in order to try and get her out, all while dealing with a dastardly man named Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix) who may have ruined her chance at a happy ending with his cousin Emil (Jeremy Renner). The movie hasn't garnered much buzz, but it looks like it could be worth checking out.
In 1921 Ewa Cybulski (Marion Cotillard) and her sister Magda (Angela Sarafyan) arrive at Ellis Island, New York. Magda is quarantined because of her lung disease and Ewa is almost deported, until a charming but wicked man named Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix) takes her to his house. Knowing that Ewa has to make money to get Magda back, Bruno lets her dance at the Bandits' Roost theater and become a prostitute. There she meets Emil (Jeremy Renner), Bruno's cousin, who tries to save her, but only more complications arise. The Immigrant, directed by James Gray (We Own the Night, Two Lovers) premieres at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, and The Weinstein Company releases it in limited theaters next month on May 16th.
