Get ready for more odd, exciting, intriguing cinema to catch this fall, as Drafthouse Films has confirmed release dates (via BoxOfficeMojo) for a number of their 2014 films. The doc The Final Member just opened today, and they have Borgman, Nothing Bad Can Happen and Mood Indigo set for the summer. After that, they just scheduled Ari Folman's half-animated mind-trip sci-fi filmThe Congress (starring Robin Wright as seen in the teaser photo) for August 29th late in the summer. Dog Day Afternoon doc The Dog will also be released in early August. Drafthouse Films has four additional films set to open late 2014. Read on!
One of the two documentaries the indie distributor picked up at Sundance, Nick Cave's 20,000 Days on Earth about the musician, will hit theaters in September after playing at numerous festivals throughout the year. The other Sundance doc they bought, The Overnighters, which I went absolutely nuts over has been given a November 7th release date. This is the one doc that I think will be their 2014 Oscar nominee (in their last two years they've had The Act of Killing and Bullhead). Lastly, two other midnight films are scheduled: Sion Sono'sWhy Don't You Play in Hell? is set for October 31st, and Matsumoto's R100 is set for December 12th. We'll be keeping a watch on all of these upcoming releases.
In all honesty, Drafthouse Films is one of the best indie distributors out there. They care about quality, they care about the audience, and they support great films and filmmakers that need the support. All of the films they put out every year are worth seeing, and 2014's batch is no exception. In specific, I highly recommend The Congress, The Overnighters, 20,000 Days on Earth, Why Don't You Play in Hell. Stay tuned for more.
