What Every Bride Should Know about Cosmetic Surgeries

Every girl dreams of looking the most beautiful on her wedding day. But apart from paying utmost attention to her outfits, jewellery, hair and makeup, the new age bride is also going for something more. She wants to look absolutely perfect, and is ready to go that extra mile to achieve it.
Today, brides don’t just stop at getting their teeth corrected or a laser eye surgery. “After that, they want the Shilpa Shetty body and Angelina Jolie pout,” says Dr. Mohan Thomas, Senior Consultant, Cosmetic Surgeon, Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai. “For brides, it is a big day and so they want to put their best foot forward. Because of an increased awareness (of the treatments available), they are willing to splurge," he says, adding that he has seen a 5-10 per cent growth in those coming in for cosmetic surgery in the last five years.
There is a plethora of cosmetic surgeries that are offered. But keeping in mind all the risks involved, surgeons recommend a few surgeries, which are more viable and involve less risks for the brides-to-be. Read on to know about the most popular ones that many girls are opting for these days:

Under eye surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Long work hours and hectic schedules leading to lack of rest, and sometimes heredity can lead to dark circles or swollen-looking, puffy eyes. This can give a tired and grown-up look. Getting rid of this problem naturally can take a longer time, which is why many girls are opting for under eye cosmetic surgery or blepharoplasty.
What it involves: The procedure takes around four to five hours. It involves making incisions on the lower eyelid skin, or at times on the inside of the eye, to make the corrective changes. This can be combined with laser resurfacing on the eyelid skin to get rid of fine lines too. By two weeks after the surgery, most of the swelling or bruising resolves.
Pros: Eventually, the surgery makes the patient look fresh and younger, which all brides aim at. The skin on the eyes heals and the scars are not noticeable.
Cons: The complete healing process takes a long time- about 2-3 months. Since it involves the most delicate organ of the body, this surgery does have its risks too. There can be temporary blurredness, double vision, infection or even bleeding. Also, the result is not permanent, and the procedure may be required to get done again in future.

Liposuction

To fit into that dream dress, brides these days are choosing liposuction over rigorous workouts and strict diets. The results are quicker and visible faster.
What it involves: Liposuction is performed under general anaesthesia, using a suction device attached to another instrument called cannula. Through small incisions, the cannula is inserted into the fatty areas to suck out excess fat. The duration of the procedure depends on the amount of fat to be removed.
Pros: Liposuction promises a smooth and improved body shape. Since the fat cells are removed permanently, even if you gain weight later, the fat will not be concentrated on the area that has been treated. The recovery is quick and patients can resume normal activities in a few days.
Cons: Although this has been touted as the safest of all cosmetic procedures, it does involve some risk of infection and skin discolouration. The soreness and swelling, even after recovery, can last for a few weeks.

Nose job (Rhinoplasty)

Every bride wants to look great in all her wedding pictures, no matter what the angle they have been clicked from! Rhinoplasty, commonly called a nose job, can correct a person’s nose shape quite effectively, and many actresses can vouch for this!
What it involves: The procedure is done either under general or local anaesthesia. Incisions are made within the nostrils, or across the base of the nose in complicated cases. Then the bone and cartilage are reshaped as per the shape desired by the patient.
Pros: This surgery can make your nose look more pleasing and sharper. This procedure can also help correct any difficulty in breathing.
Cons: “This procedure takes about three weeks for the initial swelling to go down, and around six months for the swelling to soothe," shares Dr. Sivakumar, Plastic Surgeon, Right Hospitals in Kilpauk, Chennai. There might also be bruising or scarring around the eyes for some time. However, the biggest drawback can be, not liking the resulting look.

Breast augmentation

It might be hard to believe, but this surgery is no longer restricted to just models and actresses. Many women are going for this procedure with a view to get the perfect curvaceous look on their D-day.
What it involves: The procedure involves insertion of silicone bags under the breast (submammary) or between the breast and chest muscle (subpectoral) area, and then filling the bags with saline solution.
Pros: The procedure helps to expand the breast area to give a fuller look or increased cup size, and also a firmer and better contour. The recovery is quite quick, about 24-48 hours.
Cons: Even the results can be quite dramatic, the risks involved are many. Apart from asymmetry, in some cases there can be bleeding and infections. However, in rare cases, the risk can be as grave as large cell lymphoma, a type of cancer. This procedure also requires a thorough check on the surgeon's credentials, as there are chances of using low-quality silicone bags that increase the health risks.

Laser resurfacing

Wedding photographs, in particular, are of high resolution. They can show every freckle, blemish or fine line on the skin. So, rather than going for home remedies or simpler treatments at the salon, many brides choose laser resurfacing for quicker results.
What it involves: The procedure involves directing short, concentrated, pulsating laser beams at the flawed area of the skin, precisely removing layer by layer.
Pros: Laser resurfacing assures getting rid of blemishes, fine lines, freckles and spots, promising younger and brighter looking skin.
Cons: This treatment can lead to problems like permanent lightening or darkening of the skin. Other issues that can occur are scarring or infection.

What you cannot miss

Before you make the decision to go under the knife, here are some points you must not skip:
  • You should have at least six months before the wedding, even though some procedures take only two months to heal. You don’t want to get married with any post-surgery scars or swelling.
  • You should be physically fit for these surgeries. Surgeons refuse to operate on patients with a low haemoglobin or abnormal blood pressure levels.
  • Choose the right surgeon. You should trust only a certified and experienced surgeon to let them alter your looks.
  • You should be mentally prepared for any result of the surgery you are about to undergo. No surgeon can really promise if the result will be as exact as you have imagined.                                                                                                                                                                                           All said and done, it should not be forgotten that these surgeries are not a necessity, unless there is a deformity, or a major flaw that is affecting your self-esteem, and needs correction. Just talk to the surgeon at length about what you expect. Also, be prepared, for there might be results that you would not have expected.
