Director cum actor Samuthirakani celebrates his 41st birthday today.
Samuthirakani entered the film industry with dreams to make it big as an actor. He acted in a ‘blink you will miss’ role in Pandiarajan’s ‘Padikkara Vayasu.’ Later on he was inspired towards calling shots and joined as an assistant to director K.Vijayan and worked with him in many films.
Then he joined legendary director K.Balachander and worked in his 100th film ‘Parthale Paravasam’. That also fetched him the offer to direct the Television serials produced by Balachander.
In 2003 Samuthirakani directed his first feature film ‘Unnai Charanadaindhen’ that had Venkatprabhu as the lead actor. The film fetched him the Tamilnadu State award for Best Story Writer. Then he directed Vijaykanth in ‘Neranja Manasu’ but the film bombed at the box office.
Though he had appeared in quite a few films before, his performance as the cunning uncle of the Swathy in Sasikumar’s trendsetter film ‘Subramaniapuram’ brought his acting skills to the forefront.
After that he directed ‘Nadodigal’ and ‘Porali’ both having Sasikumar as the lead hero Both the films were super hits and took Samuthirakani as a director to other languages to remake these two films.
He also elevated as the lead hero in Arivazhagan directed ‘Sattai’ that focused on the problems in Government school. His recent directorial venture ‘Nimirndhu Nil’ starring Jeyam Ravi and Amala Paul was a hard take on corruption that film has placed him on the lines of Shankar and A.R.Murugadoss.
The film was commercially successful and critically acclaimed. In the mean time Samuthirakani had become a successful character artiste in Malayalam films like ‘Shikar’, ‘D Company’ and ‘The Reporter’.
Samtuhirakani is currently acting in multiple projects including Dhanush starrer ‘Velayilla Pattadhari’ and ‘Aadhar’. As a director his next will be a film titled Kitna (Krishna) in which he will also don the lead role.
