Colin Trevorrow Says 'Jurassic World' Sequels Are Already Planned

Though we won't see Universal's sequel Jurassic World until next summer, that doesn't mean the studio isn't already planning on more sequels to follow what will essentially be a franchise reboot. Though we haven't gotten any specific details on the plot, the concept art that surfaced shows off a fully functional version of Jurassic Park, and one that will likely be stricken by disaster when dinosaurs break free again. Hopefully we'll get more information on that soon, but in the meantime, director Colin Trevorrow spoke with Empire and discussed an awareness of plans for sequels to follow Jurassic World to not be episodic.

Trevorrow said he would come back to direct any sequels if asked, and then talked about their potential:

“We definitely talked about [sequels] a lot. We wanted to create something that would be a little bit less arbitrary and episodic, and something that could potentially arc into a series that would feel like a complete story.”

That's definitely better than the way the original sequels to Jurassic Park unfolded. The only thing tying them together were characters from the original film, but there weren't many overarching elements other than the dinosaurs themselves. This time, several of the characters have been created and written to allow them to expand over several films. However, details on that subject do venture into spoiler territory, since it might hint at who survives in Jurassic World, so if you want to go into next summer's dinosaur adventure completely blind, then read no more:

"[Omar Sy is] essentially Chris Pratt’s best friend. They work together and have some pretty cool action scenes together. I wanted to create a relationship there that could be memorable and potentially carry on to future films.”

Notice that Trevorrow didn't necessarily spoil the film since he said "could" in that sentence. Of course, since it sounds like Chris Pratt is the hero, we're betting he and his sidekick will survive the sequel. But with Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson, Jake Johnson, Ty Simpkins, Vincent D'Onofrio and more, there's plenty of dino treats left. As of now, all we know is that Jurassic Worldwill return to the original island, Isla Nublar, 22 events after the original Jurassic Park, and something will happen at the new operational theme park. We're not sure what, but production is underway in Hawaii right now, and then off to New Orleans, so we're hoping to hear details on the story sooner than later. Sound good?
